How Do You Select Your Bathroom Vanity Size?

How do you select your bathroom vanity size? Should you choose a single sink or two? The answer is less complex than you might think. There are several standard sizes to choose from, and the size and shape of your bathroom will quickly determine which is right for you.

Here are 5 rules of thumb to follow when making your vanity size selection…

Rule 01. Distance Between Wall and Potty Will Determine Vanity Size

I’ve been inside a LOT of clients’ bathrooms over the last 10 years, and I can tell you — they’re standardized! Well, here in the U.S., at least. The standard American bathroom footprint places the vanity in line with the potty, then the bathtub or tub-shower combo. Which means your bathroom footprint probably looks something like this:

Where do you measure? The distance between the entry wall and the potty. This space will almost always define the size of the vanity that will fit. However…

Rule 02. Check Clearance Codes First

There’s no point in determining your vanity size without checking local codes for compliance first. Every region has a set amount of clearance required around the potty. Get this number from your local GC, and be sure to subtract it from the amount of space between the wall and toilet. Now, you know how much space your vanity has available for looking fresh and fabulous.

Rule 03. Guidelines for Vanity Size by Type of Bathroom

The number of sinks in the bathroom — and the type of bathroom — is the third consideration when selecting your vanity size. In general, you will only want one sink in a powder bathroom or secondary bathroom. However, you will want double sinks for a primary bathroom or ensuite, if possible. This is for your resale value, which we are always thinking about!

Here are the measurements you’re likely to want in each type of space. Cross reference these with your measurements, and you have your answer.

  • For a powder bathroom: 24”
  • For a secondary bathroom with one sink: 36”-48”
  • For a primary bathroom or ensuite: double vanity at 60”
  • For any bathroom with a double vanity: 60”
