“Is subway tile out of style?” I’ve been hearing this question for a couple years now, and it’s understandable. We’ve seen an explosion of subway tile use in homes over the last decade, and what goes up must come down, right? Well, not necessarily…
Although subway tile is popular, I would never call it “trendy.” It’s a classic!
Subway tile has been used throughout design for hundreds of years, and I’m confident that it will continue to have a role in our homes long into the future. Worried about it feeling dated or boring? Here’s how to dress it up…
01. Creative ways to use a basic shape
One of the biggest advantages of subway tile is that there are so many ways to configure it. Not a fan of the traditional brick-style layout? Not a problem. Turn those rectangular tiles into new and interesting layouts that speak more to your sense of style. Easy as that!

02. A canvas for the rest of the design
Classic is never boring… unless you want it to be. (No judgment here!) Instead, you can choose to let a classic element, like subway tile, be the foundation for the rest of the design. With a classic foundation, you can elevate the style and feel of the rest of the space using other elements and accessories. Plus, you will never tire of clean, straight lines. They’re easy on the eyes, no matter how long you look at them.

03. Room for variety in color, texture & finish
The final reason to hail subway tile as a timeless classic? Who says it has to be basic white?! Subway tile comes in a variety of colors, textures, and finishes that let you get as creative as you want to. For example, our Hudson Design Kit (Fall 2021) uses charcoal-toned tiles with high-gloss finish for a smart, polished look and visual depth.
