If you’re like me, you know that a solid plan is the surest route to control, confidence, and success from start to finish (especially when are you planning to renovate your bathroom). As a result, It puts you in the driver’s seat with a trusty map and that carefree, full-tank-of-gas feeling. (You know the one!)
Renovations are no different. Without a plan, details are overwhelming, decision-making feels risky, & there are so many places to get stuck. Believe me, I know — Therefore, I’ve been designing and renovating homes for a decade now, and I’ve seen. it. all.
So, where do you start?
Step 1: Step back & assess the situation
Clear out the head-clutter and overwhelm by stepping back and making a list. (List-makers unite!) So, take a pencil & paper into the bathroom and write down…
- What is working in this bathroom?
- What isn’t working or feels dysfunctional?
And the most important question… will this layout work for you?
If the answer is “yes,” your bathroom renovation will be cosmetic-only — but still transformational! You’re ready for Step 2.
If the answer is “no,” you might want to work with a designer. As a larger scale remodel, your design, process, investment, and final result can reach its full potential with a professional on your side. (If you’re in San Antonio, reach out to us here!)
Step 2: Get clear on your design style
Do you know your design style? How would you describe it? Is it fresh? Moody? Colorful? Classic? Sophisticated? If you’re not sure what your design style is, this is where Pinterest will be your friend.
For example, type in “bathroom design” and let yourself fall down a rabbit hole of ideas and inspiration. No need to define your style just yet — pin away until you have 30-50 bathrooms you love.
Then, go through your selections, edit out any that don’t feel quite right, and look for the common themes in the rest. Now, are they fresh? Moody? Colorful? Classic? Playful yet stylish? How would you describe them? Write these insights down, too.
Next, you’re ready to translate that great taste into action…
Step 3: Decide how you will design your bathroom
Fun Fact: Your General Contractor (GC) will not design your bathroom for you, and honestly, you won’t want them to! Likewise, they are builders, not designers. But you do want a sophisticated, stylish result… So what are your options design-wise?
Option A: The Hard Way. Pick all the materials yourself and hope they look good together. (P.S. This is consequently where people find themselves totally stuck and their project errrrts to a halt! Indecision overwhelm is real.)
Option B: The Pricey Way. Hire an interior designer to create a design concept for you. This is the best way to get a high-end custom solution (however, this is what we do at our luxe sister company, Styleberry Creative), but it is a considerable expense that you may not be willing to invest in a bathroom.
Option C: The Easy, Confident Way. For professionally curated design selections that won’t break the bank but will give you fresh, sophisticated style at multiple price tiers, go with a Sourced Bathroom Design Kit. Best part? Above all, even the lowest price tier maintains quality standards we trust to hold up to everyday life… because isn’t that the point??
So, which did you pick? Option C? I thought so. Let’s move along to…
Step 4: Fine-tune your design & material selections
If you’re working with a professional, they’ll do this for you. Although if you’re completing this step on your own, let me tell you, precision is key. You will need to record the precise dimensions, Refinishes, styles, etc. of every item that will go into your bathroom. Here’s why…
For example, when you hire a General Contractor (Step 5), they will need this information to give you an accurate bid for your project. Without it, you’re likely to see misjudged quotes, communication errors, and overall frustration during your project. Pass.
Fortunately, if you plan to use a Design Kit, we facilitate this process for you by giving you all of the information you need and a “Spec Book” where you can record your selections. But I’m getting ahead of myself…
Firstly, head over to this season’s collection of Sourced Kits and find the Design Kit that speaks to your sense of style. In each Design Kit, you’ll have a beautiful shopping list for every item you could need:
- All hardscape materials: floor tile, wall tile, niche tile, grout selections, countertop, schluter
- Stand alone vanity and/or paint color for a custom cabinetry design of your choice
- Sink (if not included with a vanity)
- Cabinet Hardware (if not included with a vanity)
- Wall Hooks & Towel/TP Fixtures
- Wall Color
- Plumbing Fixtures
- Lighting Fixtures
- Bonus: Option for a stand alone shower + shower floor tile
- Bonus: Option for a freestanding tub
- Bonus: Art & Styling items (like Shower Curtain, Rugs, Wall Shelves, Framed Art, etc.)
Furthermore here comes the fun part. You can browse the options, mix and match price tiers, and record your final selections in the Spec Book. Voilà! — you have a fresh, stylish, professional bathroom design for renovation confidence and incredible results! I know, why didn’t we think of this sooner?
Step 5: Recruit a trusted GC for implementation
Armed with a design plan, confidence, and a take-charge attitude, you’re ready to find a local General Contractor to renovate your bathroom. In addition, for accurate quotes and clear communication, hand over your Spec Book and our technical drawings, renderings, and elevations.
(Note: If you’re working with an interior designer directly, they may or may not manage this part of the process for you.)
Then, once the plan for the space has been finalized with your GC, you can use the Design Kit’s purchase links to order exactly what your GC will need to create the space. In most cases, once your project is booked and your materials are delivered on-site, your GC will be able to get started.
In conclusion, the rest is implementation, project management, and styling — and yep, we’ve got you covered there, too! Above all use the included Renovation Guidebook for help navigating your renovation and follow our drawings for art installation and styling with designer-worthy results.
Before you know it, you will have led your own renovation to success, and look out, world! Is there anything you can’t do with a smart plan & confidence? Certainly not.
